KIST Launches Project to Build Big Data Platform to Respond to Infectious Diseases
Amid repeated concerns about infectious diseases and the shortening cycle of appearances of new infectious diseases, the production, opening, standardization, and distribution of public and private data will begin in earnest to enhance infectious disease responsiveness.
On August 3rd, a briefing session was held at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Dr. Seok-Jin Yoon) headquarters in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, for the launch of the “Big Data Platform and Center Building Project for Infectious Diseases” by Dr. Jae-Pyeong Ahn’s team in KIST’s Research Resources Division.
Through this project, KIST researchers announced that they aim to analyze the overall national and social impacts caused by infectious diseases, including COVID-19, with data and establish a data ecosystem based on this.
Based on the development of the AI and Big Data industries, which are key drivers of the 4th Industrial Revolution, the platform is expected to:
△ Provide scientific evidence for quarantine policies;
△ Secure medical system stability and support vaccine and new drug development;
△ Provide analyses of industrial economic changes and establish 130 types of convergence-based big data.
In particular, AI-based infectious disease response and society-wide ripple effect prediction models will be developed to provide systematic and preemptive quarantine policies.
To this end, KIST researchers formed a consortium to fuse public and private data from various fields of society. DataStreams, a company which has extensive experience developing big data platforms and new AI technologies, will be in charge of opening, distributing, and utilizing data for the platform. Participating institutions will include The Bank of Korea and the National Medical Center, which will provide social, economic, and emergency medical data, and private companies including Magis, Omni System, CellKey, and Vinea will also collaborate by providing communication, medical, and medical thesis data.
