The Center of Human-centered Interaction for Coexistence Holds Tech. Fair 2018
On January 30 and 31, at Gwacheon National Science Museum, the Center of Human-centered Interaction for Coexistence (CHIC) will hold Tech. Fair 2018, which will exhibit the original and the best “coexistence reality” technologies.
In a fully realized coexistence reality, users in vastly different time zones and locations can experience shared sensations (three-dimensional viewing, sounds, vibrations, sensation of movement, touch, etc.) while also effectively communicating real-time emotions, intentions, and ideas with each other. It is an environment that blends reality with virtual reality (VR), allowing users to interact and collaborate as though they were face to face. They can also manipulate virtual information and/or objects in a manner that corresponds with the physical world, blurring the boundary between VR and reality.
CHIC is part of the Ministry of Science and ICT’s Global Frontier Projects and is led by Dr. You Bum-Jae of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). Nine institutions will participate in Tech. Fair 2018, including KIST, Korea University, Sungkyunkwan University, Hanyang University, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, and Sangmyung University. Around 30 of the CHIC’s cutting-edge R&D outcomes over the past seven years will be on display.
Such outcomes include two-handed interactive input technology that lets users use their hands to solve virtual cubic puzzles (development team leader: Dr. Park Jung Min from KIST); motion capture via optical fibers (development team leader: Dr. Kim Jinseok from KIST); digital cartography technology that enables a robot to record and reproduce full-color 3D geographical imaging of building interiors (development team leader: Prof. Doh Nakju from Korea University); digital diagnosis technology based on webcams that conduct eye analyses to determine people’s heart rates and then gauge their social attitudes (development team leader: Prof. Whang Mincheol from Sangmyung University); avatar modeling technology that can create an elaborate 3D model of a user’s appearance in only five minutes (development team leader: Dr. Ahn Sang Chul from KIST); human interface technology based on wearable electromyogram sensors (development team leader: Dr. Kim Keehoon from KIST); SomaCube, a foundational technology for creating a VR environment where people in distant locations can gather together to communicate and manipulate objects as though physically present in a group (development team leader: Dr. You Bum-Jae from CHIC); and “mixed reality” technology for practicing surgical techniques by extracting the internal organs from virtual mannequins (development team leader: Dr. You Bum-Jae from CHIC).
Most of the exhibitions will be interactive, allowing visitors to personally experience coexistence reality for themselves―a technology that is expected to someday allow for educational, medical, and other kinds of services to be provided virtually, thereby fulfilling regional shortages and enhancing global communication.
Technology presentations and business-partnering opportunities will be offered for companies throughout the event. Companies wishing to take part in the business partnering should register in advance at http://www.chic.re.kr.
Dr. You Bum-Jae, as head of the CHIC, expects that Tech. Fair 2018 will generate new product ideas and partnerships among the attendees.
