Dr. Sang-Hyup Lee Appointed Fourth Director-General of Green Technology Center(GTC)
On November 14, 2022, Dr. Seok-Jin Yoon, President of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), appointed Dr. Sanghyup Lee as the fourth Director-General of the Green Technology Center (GTC) at KIST’s headquarters in Hawolgok-dong, Seongbuk-gu. Over the next three years (Nov. 2022 – Nov. 2025), Dr. Sang-Hyup Lee will lead the GTC’s efforts to support Korea's green and climate technology R&D policies and international cooperation in responding to climate change at home and abroad.
Since its establishment in 2013, the GTC has been designated and run as a "climate change response agency" under the mission of promoting the development of the national climate industry and contributing to global climate change responsiveness by establishing green and climate technology policies and supporting domestic and international climate technology cooperation.
As the new Director-General of the GTC, Dr. Lee set "leadership," "win-win strategies," "balance of reduction-adaptation technologies," "data platforms," and "harmony" as management innovation strategies. In particular, the GTC actively plans to pursue adaptation technologies so that climate technology is less focused on mitigation technologies, and operate an institution to actively reflect international policy directions and establish a more efficient foundation for climate change response.
Dr. Lee earned his Doctorate in Environmental Engineering from Seoul National University and conducted research at KIST after graduating from Korea University in Materials Engineering. As an authority in the environmental field, he served as the Head of KIST’s Center for Water Cycle Research, and since 2018, he has served as the Head of the National Research Foundation of Korea’s Division of Energy and Environment Technology, where he played a major role in R&D planning, including for climate technology, and participated in implementing various new projects and policies in energy and environment-related fields.
Dr. Lee said, "It is meaningful to take office as Director-General of the Green Technology Center, which marks its 10th anniversary next year. As responding to climate change is the way forward for our world, I think the Green Technology Center has a new opportunity," adding, "Many research institutes affiliated with the National Research Council of Science and Technology are studying carbon neutrality and climate change response technologies. The Green Technology Center will faithfully perform its role as a platform where research results can come about as technological achievements that actually contribute to carbon neutrality and climate change response through active collaboration with other research institutes."
