Hongneung R&D Special Zone Launches Seoul's First Remote Treatment Special Demonstration Program
KIST (President: Seok-Jin Yoon) has announced that it will be promoting a special demonstration of the "remote treatment assistance system for brain disease patients" together with the Korea University Medical Center and ECEN. The program, the first of its kind in Seoul, started on September 8 with discharged stroke patients.
According to data from the National Health Insurance Corporation, the number of patients treated for stroke has increased almost every year over the past 6 years, standing at 530,000 in 2015, 570,000 in 2016 and 2017, 590,000 in 2018, 610,000 in 2019, and 590,000 in 2020. In particular, many are elderly patients in their 50s and up, so immediate prescription and preventive measures are needed in emergency situations.
Patients who participate in this special demonstration program will be able to fill the gaps between rounds of face-to-face treatments with non-face-to-face, or remote, treatments. The patient's meals, medication status, questionnaire results, and physical function data using IoT devices can be shared with medical staff and monitored in real time. Based on this data, medical staff can help patients quickly recover through personalized prescriptions.
If remote treatment becomes available, patients with limited mobility who are burdened by attending face-to-face treatments can still see a doctor in between visits and abnormal symptoms can be detected at an earlier stage. In addition, discussions are underway with related ministries to safely provide services such as remote prescription issuance and drug delivery, which is expected to greatly improve access to medical care for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and residents in isolated areas such as islands and mountains.
Sung-Min Han, a senior researcher in KIST’s Bionics Research Center and the driving force behind the program, stated, "Patients with impaired mobility or disabilities due to neurological impairment need intensive care in the early stages. Through this special demonstration program, a remote treatment assistance system for patients with brain diseases can play such a role."
Hwan Lim, Head of the Hongneung R&D Special Zone Project Group, commented, "This special demonstration program can lead to breakthroughs in new industries that have difficulty commercializing due to regulations through institutional support provided by the Hongneung R&D Special Zone," adding, "We will actively provide access to infrastructure from hospitals, universities, and research institutes within the Hongneung R&D Special Zone so that companies with innovative technologies can receive approval for special demonstrations."
KIST, Kyunghee University, and Korea University are key members of the Hongneung Gangso R&D Special Zone in Seoul, whose aim is to create a global bio cluster by implementing various growth strategies such as fostering super gap companies, supporting global expansion, operating the GRaND-K Startup School, and fostering professional manpower. In particular, Hongneung is the only area in Seoul where special demonstrations are possible, and is actively promoting support through the establishment of an institutional foothold so that many companies in the bio and medical industries can pursue new business ventures using new technologies.
