The Era of Artificial Intelligence: Scientists and Artists Asked about "Humanity"
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) announced that it would be co-hosting an exhibition titled "Artist View of Science: AVS" with the Soorim Cultural Foundation (Chairman: Kyu-Hak Choi) at the Kim Hee-Su Art Center in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul from March 16th to April 29th.
KIST and the Soorim Cultural Foundation have been conducting the AVS project, an exhibition that combines science and art, since 2019. Now in its fourth year, AVS is an exhibition leading the popularization of science by showcasing content representing the fusion of science and art to the public through collaboration between scientists and artists.
Following on themes from previous years, which included “Used Future” in 2019, "Disaster Sensibility" in 2020, and "Data Garden" in 2021, this year’s exhibition featured eight works, including five works created jointly by KIST scientists and artists from different fields, on the theme "Natural Replica." The exhibition explores the attitudes necessary beyond the dichotomous thinking of humans and machines in an era of widespread artificial intelligence, the "humanity" that needs to be newly discovered, and the "naturalness" generated by the framework categorized and normalized by humans in this new era.
KIST President Seok-Jin Yoon stated, "Science and art have a common denominator of observation and creativity. In this exhibition, we can see how two fields which look different from one another are connected through the interaction of scientists and artists. We hope that many people come to the exhibition and feel inspired by it."
