KIST Jeonbuk Hosts KIST Composite Conference International 2018
On October 19, at its campus in Wanju, the KIST Jeonbuk Institute of Advanced Composite Materials (KIST Jeonbuk) hosted KIST Composite Conference International 2018, in which participants examined recent research trends in composite materials and discussed the future of the field in general.
Around 200 government officials and experts from industry, academia, and national research institutes were in attendance, including three world-renowned authorities on composite materials (i.e. Prof. Satish Kumar from Georgia Tech, Prof. Hubert Jaeger from TU Dresden, and Dr. Chul Park from NASA) whose participation garnered widespread attention.
These three gentlemen each gave a presentation on their respective areas of expertise. Prof. Kumar, who leads a DARPA-funded research project and works with Boeing, discussed the latest trends in carbon fiber research. Prof. Jaeger, an acknowledged global authority on composite materials used in the automotive industry and someone who served as the former Head of Technology and Innovation for SGL Group, emphasized the importance of fiber-reinforced composite materials. Finally, NASA’s Dr. Park expounded on boron nitride nanotubes.
Dr. Hong Jae-Min, director-general of KIST Jeonbuk, said, “The conference is an important forum for world-class researchers to set the future course for cutting-edge composite materials. KIST Jeonbuk is set to become a key global player in this field by further vitalizing Korea’s composite materials industry and boosting domestic industries.”
KIST Jeonbuk was established in 2008 to conduct research on cutting-edge composite materials, and it is now emerging as an industrial hub in this field, thanks to the outstanding research generated by its first-rate R&D staff and innovative infrastructure. Furthermore, it aims to reposition itself as a global leader and connect its future strategy to local industrial development in areas such as S&T human resource development and the promotion of SME growth.
