Dr. Moon Myoung-Woon Is KIST’s “Person of the Month”
On February 28, Dr. Moon Myoung-Woon from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)’s Computational Science Research Center received the KIST Person of the Month Award in recognition of his outstanding research.
Dr. Moon’s team successfully manufactured a hydrophilic aluminum-nano composite material, then commercialized all technologies related to their discovery.
In particular, the composite nano-structured material (titanium dioxide and boehmite) can be formed on aluminum surfaces via molten metal treatment of titanium dioxide nanofluid, a liquid mixture of water and nano particles. The resulting aluminum-nano composite surface is super-hydrophilic as a result of its composite nano structure. This characteristic is surprisingly durable, lasting for over two months.
When the hydrophilic surface comes in contact with water, the diffusion is rapid and widespread, making such surfaces useful for facilitating evaporation. The diffused water then absorbs the surrounding heat in order to evaporate, resulting in evaporation cooling. This is why the aluminum-nano composite material is expected to be useful for liquid desiccant cooling, as well as for heat exchangers that utilize evaporation cooling for air conditioning and refrigeration.
This technology was commercialized, and all related patents and technologies transferred to Dongjin Marine Service.
KIST’s Person of the Month Award recognizes and rewards overachievers who contribute to the institute in creative, innovative ways. Winners are selected by the Reward Deliberation Committee.
