KIST Hosts Signboard Hanging Ceremony for the Hongneung Clustering Project Group
On May 29, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), along with its fellow member institutions in the Hongneung Forum, launched the Hongneung Clustering Project Group, whose aim is to develop the Hongneung region into a hub for bio/medical innovation. The signboard hanging ceremony took place at KIST headquarters in Seoul, and attendees included Dr. You Seung-hee, a National Assembly member; Dr. Lee Jin-gyu, the 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT; and Dr. Kim Myung Ja, president of the Hongneung Forum’s board of directors.
Since its establishment in 2012, the Hongneung Forum, a consortium of 17 institutions located in the Hongneung area, has been working to further develop the Hongneung R&D complex and suggest future national agenda items, such as last year’s proposal for a bio/medical innovative cluster. The member institutions plan to mobilize about 5,500 local PhD staff in a way that aligns with the regional development plans created by the national and municipal governments.
Through university-hospital-institute-enterprise cooperation, the group aims to propose a new model for linking research results to clinical testing and commercialization in real time. The group plans to increase translational research projects (participated in by KIST, Korea University Medical Center, Kyung Hee University Medical Center, and Seoul Bio Hub) and construct a testbed where innovative technologies are experimented with, tested, and validated. In particular, the concept of public design will be applied to the clustering in order for the Hongneung complex to establish its own identity and dynamic.
Another core objective of the group is to turn the complex into a hub for business/job creation. In this regard, the group has announced its plan for creating high-quality jobs through the construction of an advanced ecosystem for supporting new business.
Last but not least, the member institutions resolved to open up their R&D facilities to new/venture enterprises, thereby tearing down institutional barricades and establishing “one” campus.
KIST Vice-President Yoon Seok-Jin, head of the group, stated that, “the Clustering Project Group embodies people’s expectations and hard work for vitalizing the Hongneung area. The group will work even harder to become a hub for bio/medical job creation and innovative growth, as well as a world-class innovation cluster.”
