H.E. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Former President of India paid a visit to KIST in the afternoon of Feb. 25, 2008. Dr. Kalam visited to Korea from Feb. 24 to Feb. 26, 2008 as an invited guest for the inaugural ceremony of President Myung-bak LEE.
During the discussion, Dr. KUM explained our cooperative relationship with India including the annual KIST-IISc workshop and emphasized the importance of India as a partner in science and technology. Dr. Kalam stated that he's personally very interested in neural science and robotics and explained a project named "World Knowledge Platform" which he's discussing with LEE. Also, he presented Dr. KUM his renowned book, "India 2020 - A Vision for the New Millennium."
After the discussion, Dr. Kalam had a chance to meet the Indian scientists and students currently staying at KIST and encourage them. Around 40 Indian scientists and students welcomed him and showed their deep repect.
Then, he visited Intelligent Microsystem Center, Center for Cognitive Robotics Research and Center for Neural Science and witnessed the research achievements and current research activities of KIST.
Born on October 15, 1931 at Rameswaram, Dr. Kalam, specialized in Aeronautical Engineering from Madras Institute of Technology. Dr. Kalam made significant contribution as Project Director to develop India's first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle(SLV-III) in 1980. After two decades, Dr. Kalam took up the responsibility of developing indigenous Guided Missiles at Defense R&D Organization. From 1992 to 1999, he led to make India a nuclear weapon country as the Scientific Adviser to Defense Minister and Secretary.
Dr. Kalam became the 11th President of India on July 25, 2002, and completed his term on July 25, 2007.
