The 2013 KIST R&D Expo was held at the KIST main campus located in Hwarangno 14-gil 5, Seongbuk-gu from December 5 to 6. The 2013 Expo consisted of various events including review of KIST’s key achievements for the year 2013 and the future strategies, patent sharing events, a symposium on joint research into convergence, and the 1st Student Science Invention Ideas Contest. In line with this event, 37 research achievements of the 2013 KIST’s Open Research Program will be displayed on the first floor of International Cooperation Building by next February. The achievements of the Open Research Program include early diagnosis of dementia, prevention of algal blooms, and other achievements in six research fields including neuroscience and medical engineering.
About 200 people from universities, research institutes, and businesses participated in the Expo including Kim, Gun, Chairman of the Korea Research Council of Fundamental Science and Technology (KRCF). In addition, Sohn, Dong-yeon, Chief of Doosan Infracore, Corporate R&D Division, delivered a keynote speech entitled, “Promoting Cooperation between Industry, Academia, and Research Institutes,” which details the kind of mindset that should be held by the government, businesses, KIST and its researchers.
On the first day, (December 5th), a patent transfer ceremony was held. This ceremony is a part of the Patent Sharing Project, which was launched last October. The goal of the project is to transfer dormant patents owned by KIST to SMEs (small- and medium-sized enterprises) free of charge or allowing SMEs to apply such patents with no initial payment. In addition, the project is designed to strengthen the competitiveness of SMEs since they are the key players in the “creative economy.” Since last October, 38 SMEs have applied for 94 patents. Applicants were present at the ceremony. Along with the transfer ceremony, another ceremony to reward eight research managers who have consigned with a third party contractor and achieved successful results was held. In addition, the year-end meeting of K-Club (launched in last March) was also held, which will support SMEs as well as greatly contributing to the development of SME competitiveness.
In the afternoon on the first day, the awardees of the 1st Student Science Invention Ideas Contest sponsored by KIST presented their ideas. The applicants of this contest were elementary, middle, and high school students, and KIST will select the best ideas and give full support. In addition to the presentations, an introduction to promising commercialized technologies to boost cooperation among industry, academia, and research institutes, and a job fair were held.
On the second day (December 6th), a symposium on the development of programs, which boost convergence, creativity, and communication, and a presentation on past achievements were held. At the symposium on convergence and joint research, Ph.D. researchers who entered KIST after 2012 introduced their research work and presented posters on New Researchers in Convergence. This was followed by the “Convergence Technology Program (CTP),” which presented Convergence and Joint Research by managers actually conducting research in a story-telling way.
In the afternoon, six teams that made the cut in the “KIST Pioneership” contest gave presentations on their plans to implement innovative research. The applicants of “KIST Pioneership” are mainly composed of young researchers from three or more research areas. KIST rewarded excellent researches and provided funds to the teams according to their research characteristics. “KIST Pioneership” was followed by “KIST Junior Society” where articles written by researchers (junior researchers not in charge of any research) are evaluated and rewarded.
Lee, Byung-kwon, Acting President of KIST, said, “KIST will focus its research capacity on becoming a leading research institute in the world and spearhead convergence science technologies by establishing an open research and development platform where industry, academia, and research institutes are encouraged to participate. This Expo will be a valuable venue where such mutual cooperation and exchange are ensured.”
