2023 Seoul S&T Forum Held
On November 7, 2023, KIST (President: Seok-Jin), the National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST / Chair: Bok-chul Kim), and Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI / President: Mi Ock Mun) held the 2023 Seoul S&T Forum at The Plaza Hotel.
The forum, which marks its 10th anniversary this year, originated with the G20 summit held in Seoul in 2010, and since that time has been a venue for government-funded research institutes, domestic and foreign science and technology research and policy leaders, and international organizations to discuss potential solutions to global issues through science and technology.
Under the theme of "AI Innovation and Our Future Society," this year’s forum focused on the infinite possibility of technological innovation with AI, and the future life of mankind, AI, and robots.
In the keynote speeches, Ruslan Salakhutdinov, a Professor of Machine Learning at Carnegie Mellon University and world-renowned scholar in the field of AI, and So Ah Park, Vice President of VAIV Company, discussed the use of AI technology and data and future development plans for it. Afterward, the first session featured presentations on the topics of “Creating an Environment for Utilizing AI Technology,” “Understanding of AI Regulation System and Policy Implications,” and Aligning AI to Commercial Value,” followed by a panel discussion and Q&A session.
The second session featured presentations and a panel discussion on the topics of “Machine Learning Techniques for Science and Engineering: Focused Study on Materials Science,” “Geospatial Foundational AI for Sustainable and Regenerative Agriculture,” and “Efficient Large-scale 3D Modeling Using Omnidirectional Vision and Depth Sensing.”
NST Chair Bok-chul Kim stated, "Ultimately, the fate of AI also depends on how humanity develops and utilizes it. I hope that this forum can be an opportunity for us to think about how we can use AI to create a better future society and what innovations can be brought about."
In his welcoming speech, Seok-Jin Yoon, President of KIST, commented, "Humanity is now at a point where it must look beyond merely developing and using AI, and seriously consider how to overcome its risks and limitations. I hope it will be a place to explore regulatory and policy countermeasures necessary for future industries by considering the utility and risks of AI."
Meanwhile, STEPI President Mi Ock Mun stressed that “In the future, we need to secure international credibility in domestic AI regulations, and for this, we need to closely examine international AI regulatory trends and strategically design policies.”
