KIST Holds "Folded Machine, Spreading Imagination" Science Exhibition at Seoul Science Center
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Seok-Jin Yoon) held an interactive science exhibition under the theme "Folded Machines, Spreading Imagination" at the Seoul Science Center for two weeks from August 9th. Researchers were on-site to support visitor experiences and explain principles.
The "three-dimensional electronic garden" is an exhibition that allows visitors to manipulate flowers in virtual spaces using gestures. Videos on content such as motion recognition and sensor-operated machines were also screened to help visitors understand these principles. Guests who participated in the on-site workshop located in Exhibition Hall B were also able to experience folding paper to make flowers and manipulating the flowers within a virtual space. Three teams, consisting of a maximum of two people per team, operated the workshop, which ran five times per day.
Meanwhile, the "human-type soft robot" was developed through the application of 3D printing and artificial intelligence technologies to the soft origami robot developed by KIST in 2018. The humanoid robot, which could be seen at the exhibition singing various popular songs, was created using the SOFT, LUMINESCENT, AUDIO, and (MOTION INTELLIGENT) SLAM automated motion animatronics technologies. Utilizing the cognitive science aspect that hearing and vision together create harmony within the human brain, the robot is the first of its kind that can sing while doing the appropriate motions, providing visitors with a new, immersive experience.
Se-Hyuk Yim, a principal researcher from KIST’s Center for Intelligent & Interactive Robotics who was in charge of the exhibition, said, "It is important to understand and creatively express the core of future science and technology not only at our research site, but also at the Seoul Science Center."
The President of KIST, Seok-Jin Yoon, commented, "I think Korea’s future is becoming increasingly brighter as more and more excellent students go into the science and engineering fields. "We at KIST will work hard to create an environment where students can enjoy learning science in connection with local communities and the Seoul Science Center."
This exhibition is the culmination of a project to promote the capacity-building of science and culture exhibition services with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister: Jong-Ho Lee) and the National Research Foundation of Korea. The researchers involved will produce COOK-BOOK, which includes both materials and processes, so that local science and other museums can produce and use 3D electronic gardens on their own, and release it through the KIST website and virtual museum in December.
