Science and Technology Meets 5G
A national research institute and a private company have joined forces to innovate 5G, the technology that has permeated our daily lives. The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Dr. Seok-Jin Yoon) and KT (CEO: Hyun Mo Koo) signed an MOU on October 20 to solve national social issues and provide safety and benefits to the public.
The two organizations will collaborate on finding
solutions to social issues by combining KIST's research capabilities and KT's
ICT capabilities. To promote safety and provide citizens with other benefits,
joint research will be conducted in areas such as quarantines, the environment,
safety, energy, and healthcare.
KIST will be testing use of a transport robot prototype
for handling daily necessities in the more than 100 COVID-19 treatment centers
in Korea through KT's 5G networks. The robot, which can put daily necessities
on a simple table at the front of a room, is scheduled to perform a service
demonstration in 2022, and the two organizations plan to jointly develop the
robot's control system and platform.
In addition, regarding the enforcement of the Critical
Disaster Punishment Act, the government will jointly develop and commercialize
industrial site safety robots that can collect information on sites with high
risk of industrial accidents through 5G networks and remotely operated devices.
Dr. Yoon, the President of KIST, stated, "Through this MOU, which forges a connection between KIST and KT Group's IT resources, we will support the development of cutting-edge science and technology in various fields, such as bio, medical, climate, and the environmental sector, as well as KIST's AI and robotics research. This approach will pave the way for us to improve people’s lives.”
