Dr. Yoo Sung Jong Is KIST’s “Person of the Month”
On September 24, Dr. Yoo Sung Jong from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)’s Center for Hydrogen·Fuel Cell Research received the KIST Person of the Month Award in recognition of his outstanding research.
Dr. Yoo’s team developed an inexpensive manufacturing process for creating a durable, high-performance nano-catalyst for what may be the world’s first eco-friendly post-hydrogen fuel, usable with solid-state alkaline membranes and generating up to five times more power than current hydrogen fuels.
Years of research dedicated to enhancing Dr. Yoo’s expertise on non-precious catalysts paved the way for his recent discovery of a new catalyst in the form of a graphene shell-encapsulated carbon structure―a potential replacement for the high-priced catalyst for platinum. This is expected to cause a paradigm shift in eliminating the drawbacks of existing materials (i.e. an ion exchange membrane fuel cells), representing a giant step forward both academically and commercially. The resulting article was published in the July edition of Energy & Environmental Science and prominently featured on its back cover.
KIST’s Person of the Month Award recognizes and rewards overachievers who contribute to the institute in creative, innovative ways. Winners are selected by the Reward Deliberation Committee.
