KIST Visited by Ethiopian Prime Minister
On August 26, the prime minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed Ali, visited the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) to discuss plans for collaborating on future S&T activities.
It was KIST’s first time to host the head of the Ethiopian government, though Prime Minister Ali had visited KIST five years ago while serving as director general of Ethiopia’s Science and Technology Information Center (STIC).
While touring KIST’s cutting-edge research labs, including the Post-Silicon Semiconductor Institute, Prime Minister Ali emphasized the importance of institutes like KIST for promoting national economic development.
KIST has worked hard to establish cooperative R&D and educational networks with Ethiopia. Last year, it signed an MoU with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education regarding exchanges of S&T information and personnel.
KIST President Lee Byung Gwon stated that the prime minister’s visit “reconfirmed the collaborative, S&T-based partnership between Ethiopia and KIST while opening new channels of practical cooperation.”
During his visit, Prime Minister Ali displayed strong interest in how KIST has contributed to Korea’s economic advancement, and expressed hope that expanded cooperation with KIST might lead to similar outcomes in Ethiopia as well.
