KIST Signs MoU with ROKA
- Involving S&Ts in the enhancement of national defense
On September 5th, in an effort to boost S&T collaboration for improved national defense, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) signed an MoU with the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) at ROKA headquarters.
Both parties recognize the necessity for collaborating to meet the public demand for military enhancement and to prepare for high-tech battlefield environments of the future. The MoU enables KIST to provide ROKA with technical support as well as support for defense R&D activities.
KIST President Lee Byung Gwon stated that the MoU would strengthen cooperative ties between research institutes and the Korean military, as well as promote increased national security and various other public interests.
From its inception, KIST has worked to develop national defense-related technologies such as firearms, radios, patrol boats, and a bomb disposal robot. Recently, KIST successfully completed two defense R&D projects: one on metallic fuel cells for next-generation military radios, and the other on a system for tracking ammunition shot from M61 Vulcan.
This year, KIST used its own funds to launch six new K-DARPA projects in hopes of providing the military with practical prototypes by year’s end.
