Five Values Experts Need in a Convergence Era:
Broadmindedness, Communication, Positive Thinking, Continuous Learning, Pushing the Limit.
To say that Ahn Chul-soo is just a CEO of an antivirus venture business is an understatement. To consider him as just a professor teaching entrepreneurship to the current generation is also an understatement. In fact, he is someone that is changing the world through science, a philosopher with the ability to analyze society, and an expert in balancing the study of natural science and humanities.
Over 500 people, including staff and students of KIST and employees from neighboring venture businesses gathered for KAIST Chair Professor Ahn’s lecture at the 2nd Entrepreneurship Forum held in the Johnson Auditorium. Though many were unable to find seats, they stayed and attentively listened while standing. The fervor of the auditorium was very heated.
Professor Ahn began the lecture with a story of Apple’s immensely popular products, the iPod and the iPhone. He revealed that the key to Apple’s success lies in lateral networking. Their ability to bring their “third parties,” such as contents producers and application developers, over to their side through America’s business model of horizontal networking has afforded today’s iPhone. For this innovative model to succeed in
Professor Ahn believes we should strive to be A-type people. If a T-type person is considered to be someone with deep knowledge of one’s own specialty as well as broadmindedness regarding other fields of study, an A-type person is someone who also has the capability to communicate effectively, which is important in today’s convergence era.
He discussed that the past expert’s competency followed ‘knowledge = competence,' however, today’s expert’s competency follows ‘knowledge X communication,' and further emphasized the value of communicative competency to share one’s knowledge and experiences. For Professor Ahn, communication encompasses efforts to pursue a balanced view towards the world. He stressed that endlessly pursuing the balance between the two extremes is the source of communication.
One hour was not sufficient enough for Professor Ahn to share all his knowledge and stories.
Near the end of the lecture, he emphasized one last time the importance of broadmindedness, communication, continuous learning, and pushing the limit in a convergence era.
Twenty staff members lined up to get Professor Chul-Soo Ahn’s autograph. It was just one way to show respect to the gracious yet lively CEO.
