Dr. Choi Gyung Min Is KIST’s “Person of the Month”
- Unveiled the operating mechanism of ultra-fast, next-generation spin memory
On May 23, Dr. Choi Gyung Min from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) Center for Spintronics received KIST’s Person of the Month Award in recognition of his excellent research.
Through three years of joint research with Illinois State University, Dr. Choi unveiled the operating mechanism for ultrafast spin memory: namely, using circularly polarized light to switch the magnetic domains of metals. Such ultrafast spin memory is thousands of times quicker than conventional storage methods using magnetic fields or electrical currents.
His achievement resulted in his being published as the first and corresponding author of an article in Nature Communications, one of the world’s most prestigious science journals.
KIST’s Person of the Month Award recognizes and rewards overachievers who contribute to the institute in creative, innovative ways. Candidates are nominated by their division heads, and winners are selected by the Reward Deliberation Committee.
