Dr. Kim Youngjun and Dr. Goh Munju Are KIST’s “Persons of the Month”
- For outstanding contributions to next-generation electronics
On November 29, Dr. Kim Youngjun from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)’s Center for Bionics, and Dr. Goh Munju of the KIST Jeonbuk Institute of Advanced Composite Materials’ Carbon Composite Materials Research Center, received KIST’s Person of the Month Award in recognition of their outstanding research.
Dr. Kim’s team developed new 3D simulation technology for cosmetic and dental surgery. The technology includes software that surgeons and dentists can use for making 3D simulations to help plan upcoming surgeries, and it allows for optimized surgical tools to be manufactured through 3D-printing. Such technology is expected to enhance modern surgical processes and boost success rates. KIST later transferred certain aspects of the new technology to GTG Wellness, ARC Korea, and A.TEAM Ventures.
Meanwhile, Dr. Goh’s team developed the most inexpensive and ecofriendly method available for recycling carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). Composed of carbon fibers that weigh less than aluminum but are ten times harder than steel, CFRP is used in everything from sports equipment to automobiles to ocean vessels to air/spacecraft. This innovative recycling technology runs on water and an inexpensive additive, requiring very little energy. It can restore up to 95% of used CFRP, and can be used to recycle epoxy, making it potentially applicable for industrial products like epoxy paints and circuit boards. The technology was later transferred to Catackh.
KIST’s Person of the Month Award recognizes and rewards overachievers who contribute to the institute in creative, innovative ways. Winners are selected by the Reward Deliberation Committee.
