The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) established a studio for artists to create a synergistic effect between science and art. KIST operates the “ARTKIST Residency” program for one year. The program hosted a week of open studio from November 14. The objective of this program is to build a culture of creative convergence through open communication and understanding between scientists and artists.
Scientists and artists have something in common such as making innovative achievements based on creativity. Leonardo da Vinci was a prominent scientist as well as influential artist of the time. The ARTKIST Residency program is to gather scientists and artists together to increase their interaction in order to spark creativity. In addition, this program provides a venue for artists to engage in artistic and creative activities.
KIST has selected seven young artists with great talent but lacking in space to perform their artistry and provided a space on the first floor of L3 Research Building with no strings attached for one year. The seven artists will conduct artistic activities like painting, installation arts, sculptures, display (video) arts and other activities right alongside with KIST researchers. On the other hand, KIST researchers are allowed to freely interact with each artist sharing their opinions and thoughts. In addition to regular meetings and exhibitions, there will be activities for exchanging ideas, and support for joint activities between artists and KIST researchers.
