Nguyen Sinh Hung, Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam, and the Vietnamese delegation of 14 members visited KIST on July 22. The delegation included Chairman of the Commission for External Relations, Secretary of the Office of the National Assembly, several important members of the National Assembly, Minister of the Planning and Investment, and the Vietnamese Ambassador to South Korea. Dr. Moon Kil-choo, President of Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) hosted the delegation by explaining and giving general information on KIST research and further, discussed ways to gradually increase cooperation between KIST and Vietnam, including the launch of V-KIST.
As of today, 16 Vietnamese students are currently enrolled in KIST’s IRDA program (the International R&D Academy) and 32 Vietnamese alumni have gained their masters and doctorate degrees at KIST. During his visit to Korea in March 2012, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung of Vietnam requested the Korean government to establish V-KIST modeling after KIST, which South Korea established in 1966 with a help from the U.S. The launch of V-KIST is underway as a part of KOICA’s official development assistance program.
The V-KIST project is modelled after the establishment of KIST, which greatly contributed to South Korea during its development era. Accordingly, the focus of V-KIST lies on strengthening Vietnam’s scientific and technological capacity suitable for the present conditions of Vietnam which will contribute to the development of Vietnam’s economic development.
President Moon Kil-choo stated, “Vietnam’s capacity for research will greatly improve through V-KIST and it will work as the major turning point for Vietnam’s science and technology. The Prime Minister’s visit will also encourage more cooperation and the V-KIST project will become an exemplary case for other ODA projects to follow.
