Dr. Lim Hwasup and Dr. Kang Kyungsu Are KIST’s “Persons of the Month”
On May 30, Dr. Lim Hwasup from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)’s Center for Imaging Media Research, and Dr. Kang Kyungsu of KIST’s Systems Biotechnology Research Center, each received the KIST Person of the Month Award in recognition of their outstanding research.
Dr. Lim’s team developed a 3D body-scanner that enables a depth camera to perform high-speed modeling of a human body, and sketch animation technology that automatically turns simple sketches into fully realized characters. Such interactive technology can be applied to 3D printing, 3D body measuring, and virtual avatar creation. KIST transferred the technologies to a small-sized AR/VR company.
Dr. Kang’s team discovered a new use for lactobacillus in protecting against particulate matter. They published various research into environmental toxicology using Caenorhabditis elegans, and they uploaded a scientific video to The Journal of Visualized Experiments, which is referenced by researchers around the world. KIST transferred this technology to Korea Yakult.
KIST’s Person of the Month Award recognizes and rewards overachievers who contribute to the institute in creative, innovative ways. Winners are selected by the Reward Deliberation Committee.
