The 2014 Winter Seminar of the Korean Society for Innovation, Management & Economics (led by Park, Young-il) was held February 21 to 22, 2014 under the theme of “Entrepreneurship and Technology Management 3.0,” with experts from academia, industry, and students from relevant fields to share and discuss the direction for development towards a future knowledge-based society.
In the seminar, presentations and panel discussions were held on themes such as Entrepreneurship, Technology Patent Strategy and Management, Technological Cooperation Network, Technology Management Skills, and Technology Management/Policy & Framework. Along with these, a special session was held with presentations by KIST: (KIST, The Role of KIST in the Economic Development of Korea over the Past 50 years and New Challenges in the Coming 50 years, by the Korea Institute for S&T Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP, Technology Status Analysis based on Patent Analysis) and by the Korea Technology Finance Corporation (Re-establishment of Practical Method for Technology Value Assessment).
In particular, when the role of government-funded institutions in resolving social issues is becoming more important, more focus on the socioeconomic impact of KIST over the past 47 years since its foundation gained attention from audience. 『Analysis on KIST’s Socioeconomic Impact』 was jointly conducted by the Korean Society for Innovation, Management & Economics (Head researcher Professor Lee, Hyung-hun at Kwangwoon University) and Knowledge Works, a technology management consulting company, to assess the contribution of KIST on economic development of Korea and analyzed and categorized it into Technology Stock impact, R&D performance and achievements, and policy impact. The analysis assessed that the impact of KIST would be approximately KRW 595 trillion over the past 47 years in total with KRW 199 trillion 836.8 billion in Technology Stock including papers published and patents registered, KRW 181 trillion 145.1 billion in R&D performance and achievements and KRW 213 trillion 855.4 billion in policy impact.
The 10 most representative technologies that contributed to boosting sales of industries through R&D-oriented businesses include ▲ Portable TV screen using variable capacity diode ▲Push button phone ▲Dye synthesizing technology ▲Color TV screen ▲High intensity aramid fiber technology ▲Long lasting composite fertilizer technology ▲Capsule type endoscope maze ▲Lithium-ion battery core technology ▲High efficiency solar cell technology ▲Dementia medicine technology.
Under policy impact, it was highly recognized that KIST was the first to build a brain pool inviting scientists from abroad, served as a role model for 15 other government-funded institutes, built the basic framework for science and technology research by establishing Korean-style research center management model, and made huge contribution to addressing national issues and agenda.
Established as the first comprehensive research institute in Korea, KIST will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016 and plans to look back on the achievements thus far including the above mentioned and put efforts to define a new vision that will exceed the 50 year history.

Park, Young-il, President of the Society said, “Since its foundation, KIST has been driving the development of science and technology as well as economic growth as the best public research institute, accounting for approximately 1.3% of GDP growth so far.” He also added, “I hope the 2014 Winter Seminar of the Korean Society for Innovation Management & Economics will be a venue to discuss ways of mutual cooperation and development and an opportunity to find practical solution to current issues.”
Lee, Byung-gwon the acting president of the institute said, “KIST is poised to exceed the past impacts on Korea’s economic growth over the past 47 years and will put great efforts to secure future technology, to create new growth engines, create jobs and resolve current national issues.
The Korean Society for Innovation, management & Economics was established in 1992 to contribute to the development of national science and technology policy and technology development strategy and at the same time to encourage social reform led by science and technology. Since then, the society has been engaged in diversified activities including research cooperation and advisory for industry and the government and panel discussion on national policy.
