It is a well-known fact that teaching theories along with experiments is the optimal combination for effective science education in school. However, for an experiment class, adequate lab equipment and facilities are required and regular refresher training for teachers are essential. This is not an easy task considering tight and busy schedules of teachers. To address the situation, training for science teachers is being offered in the research field.
KIST invited 30 members of the Korea Science Teachers Association to join the Nano Science Training Program for science teachers for two days from February 20 to 21. KIST invited science teachers across the nation and discussed efficient ways for research centers to make practical contribution to science education. Also, the program offered a chance for science teachers to utilize what they learn from research by allowing them to have hands-on experience in the research field facilitating cooperation between scientists and teachers to nurture young science and technology talents in schools.
Starting from the Youth Science Field Trip in 2006, KIST has been organizing various education programs including the “Nano Science Lab (Nano Truck)” and Science Camp for middle and high school students. Efforts have been made to develop and operate education programs customized to the needs of students of Korea, but in many cases these programs did not reflect the views of teachers who were actually in charge of running the programs in classrooms. Hence, the training session this time around is designed to address those concerns.
In the Nano Science Training Programs for teachers, experts from KIST and Nano Technology Research Association participated to give lectures on science theory under the theme of “Nano Science with Numbers and Computer” and “Structure of Nano Size and Device Formation.” It also provides a lecture on how to use various research facilities including nano equipment. A separate session to discuss how to run the KIST Education Donation Program is also planned.

Lee, Seung-lee, a teacher at Mankyung Middle School at Kimjae said that he expects great results from the program through exchange of ideas and learning various teaching techniques among teachers from other regions over the two days as well as experiencing the field of high-tech research.
With the Nano Science Training Program for teachers, KIST will collect opinions and experiences of science teachers in schools and develop and operate the “2014 Nano Science Lab (Nano Truck)” reflecting the feedbacks from teachers to create a user-driven program.
