Previewing the Future: KIST Holds Open Lab
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Seok-Jin Yoon) AI and Robotics Institute (Director-General: Ig Jae Kim) held the "AI and Robotics Institute Open Lab" event at the KIST headquarters in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul on November 11, 2022. The event was attended by more than 100 people who have completed online applications since October 20, along with Bok-Chul Kim, Chairperson of the National Research Council of Science & Technology, and many other domestic and overseas experts in the field of AI and robotics. At the event, 14 major technologies actively being researched by the AI and Robotics Institute’s Center for Artificial Intelligence, Center for Intelligent & Interactive Robotics, and Center for Healthcare Robotics were introduced and demonstrated.
First, the Center for Artificial Intelligence unveiled its "Complex Cognitive Technology-Derived Identity and Tracking Technology" (Director-General Ig Jae Kim) that enables the identification and movement tracking of pedestrians from a series of CCTV images, and "Meta Humanoid" technology (Principal Researcher Hwasup Lim) in which the digital human of a remote user is able to augment a humanoid robot and interact with local users.
Meanwhile, the Center for Intelligent & Interactive Robotics introduced various technologies that can be applied to our daily lives, such as the "Wearable Robot for Personalized Health Care" (Senior Researcher Jongwon Lee) for home rehabilitation and daily walking assistance for the elderly who lack lower extremity muscle strength, "Sense-Based Object Adaptation Fuzzy Robot Hand" (Principal Researcher Donghyun Hwang), and “High-Speed Drum-Playing Humanoid Robot with Hearing Intelligence" (Principal Researcher Sehyuk Yim).
Lastly, the Center for Healthcare Robotics introduced technologies applicable to medical sites such as the "Augmented Reality (AR) Surgical Navigation" (Principal Researcher Deukhee Lee) which is based on CT and MRI images, and the "MIDAS Master-Slave Robot" (Senior Researcher Jeongryul Kim), a surgical robot system which utilizes haptic technology.
Director-General of the Institute, Ig Jae Kim said, "This AI x Robot Open Lab event served as an opportunity to share the current status and achievements of related technologies under the theme of 'Previewing the Future.' We will continue to strive to secure innovative original technologies by actively developing technologies in the field."
KIST’s AI and Robotics Institute strives to develop core technologies in the field to solve national challenges and social problems and to create a future society where the public can live more convenient, safe, and healthy lives.
