KIST Celebrates 52nd Anniversary
- KIST to go “Beyond the M.I.R.A.C.L.E.*, Toward the Public,” focusing on quality of life for Korean citizens.
* M.I.R.A.C.L.E. refers to KIST’s seven core research areas (materials, information, robotics, agriculture, carbon, life, and environment).
On February 9, at its headquarters in Seoul, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) held an official ceremony commemorating its 52nd anniversary. Around 400 people attended the event, including current and former S&T officials, foreign ambassadors, and KIST employees.
KIST’s president, Dr. Lee Byung Gwon, stated, “With pride about our past achievements, KIST will lead a new S&T paradigm shift.” He asked for the attendees to encourage and support KIST in achieving its goals, and to work together to go “beyond the M.I.R.A.C.L.E., toward the public!”* The KIST alumni association president, Dr. Oh Myung-Hwan, followed up these sentiments by suggesting that KIST, as Korea’s first and leading public research institute, “make bold predictions and, after careful reflection, lead us into the future of Korean S&T.”
The main event was followed by an unveiling ceremony for a new bust of the late Dr. Choi Hyung-Sup, KIST’s founding president. Gachon University professor Lim Young Sun had crafted two busts of Dr. Choi, one to be exhibited in KIST’s main building and the other in the KIST History Museum.
Dr. Lee remarked that “KIST cherishes the memory of Dr. Choi’s achievements, and his spirit lives on in its researchers.”
