KIST Science Camp helps students find career path
Students choose their career path sand prepare for future during high school years. For those who have much interest and passion for science, a peek into the daily life of researchers can help them better understand the kind of life they hope to live someday in the future. The “Science Camp for High School Students” provides students with opportunities to experience research works in the fields.
Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST, President Lee Byung-gwon) kicked off the ‘Science Camp’ for high school students at the KIST headquarters in Hawolgok-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul on July 20.
This Science Camp covers five areas of science―brain science, life science, physics, robot and chemicals― and the program for each area lasts 1 or 2 weeks. These programs consist of hands-on experience activities where students attend lectures given by researchers followed by discussions and conduct tests in person. To that end, KIST selected research institutes which are capable of proceeding with such programs and researchers in those institutes select students, and prepare and operate programs. In addition, they develop in-depth teaching materials tailored to the levels of students so as to help improve their learning. The Science Camp ends on July 31 and at the closing ceremony students from the five areas will share the results of program activities and what they learned and felt, so that they can understand the other areas of science also covered in the Science Camp.
Ok Jae-hyun, a student from Yangjeong High School who attended the robot program in the Science Camp said “It was fascinating that I could see and experience things here that I can’t elsewhere. Most of all, this Science Camp helped me a lot in making up my mind about what I will study in university and my further career path.”
Senior researcher at Center for Environment, Health and Welfare Research, Ryu Jae-cheon, who led the life science program said “It seems students these days have vague fear when they think of their future. During the Science Camp, I tried to be their mentor as well as deliver knowledge about science. These students who participate in the program have a high level of knowledge and strong passion for research. For me as a researcher proceeding with the program, this is a very useful experience, too.”
President of KIST, Lee Byung-gwon, stated “I hope this camp program will be a good opportunities for high school students to explore career and find ways to become next generation scientists. Going forward, KIST will make continuous efforts to keep close communication with people, by organizing various events to help easy understanding of science.”
