In May, the Vietnamese government announced the special enforcement degree for the establishment of the Vietnam Korea Institute of Science & Technology (V-KIST), and it is expected to give a boost to the foundation of V-KIST which is modeled on KIST. It is not only Vietnam but also many other developing countries such as Ethiopia are looking to learn from Korea’s experience of economic development.
In response to such growing demand, KIST published『The KIST Story』, an English book aimed at sharing KIST’s history and progress with policy makers and researchers of developing countries.
KIST was founded in 1966 and it was the first state-funded research institute in the field of science technology and has played a pivotal role to the nation’s development by tapping into the power of science technology over the past five decades. 『The KIST Story』consists of six chapters and introduces KIST’s foundation, role, management system in the early days and major achievements in the context of Korea’s industrialization. In particular, its role as the driver of industrialization and key achievements on science technology are given an in-depth coverage.
In addition, key events along its history are introduced as episodes, such as the efforts of the late Korean President Park Jeong-hee and Ph.D Choi Hyoung-seop, the first director of KIST for the foundation of KIST, life of KIST researchers back in the old days, KIST’s first research project commissioned from a third party, etc.
President Lee Byung Gwon of KIST said “『The KIST Story』describes so vividly the history and progress made by KIST which played a key role in Korea’s fast economic development over five decades, and the progress of science technology in Korea. This book will hopefully give inspirations to developing countries for national development and advancement of science technology. By introducing KIST’s role and development model to developing countries, we expect to secure a global leadership in science technology and find new ODA projects.”
『The KIST Story』was first introduced to the delegations of countries participating in the OPEC meeting of science and technology ministers held at Daejeon Convention Center from October 20~21.
This book will be distributed to embassies, overseas research institutes and relevant organizations in other countries, and will also be available as e-book for sharing with policy makers and researchers in developing countries.
Going forward, KIST will make continuous efforts to share its know-how related to the foundation and operation of a science research institute and contributions to national development.
