KIST and LG Agree to Nurture and Train International R&D Talents (3.31)
On March 31, 2011, KIST and LG agreed to cooperate in training and nurturing R&D talents from overseas and in carrying out joint R&D activities.
The cooperation agreement aims to nurture and train the international students of KIST, which has been operating the International R&D Academy (IRDA) for the past 10 years since 2001, and place them in LG Group’s electronics, chemicals and telecommunications sectors. KIST’s interests of wanting to provide good jobs to its students aligns with that of LG Group, which seeks to recruit local talents that have superior R&D capabilities and an understanding of Korean culture.
Through this cooperation, both organizations will select top students, who will receive full scholarships, to take tailored courses in accordance with LG Group’s requirements. In addition, those who join LG Electronics, LG Chemicals, or any other LG subsidiaries upon graduation will be given special employee benefits.
In 2001, IRDA was launched with the approval of the National Science and Technology Commission of Korea, offering full scholarships, including tuition and living expenses, to its students. Currently, approximately 100 students are enrolled in the program. To date, 139 students from 23 countries have graduated, and a considerable number of graduates are serving as leaders in the field of science and technology in their respective countries, as professors, technical public officers and research scientists. For this reason, this program has been evaluated as the most successful official development assistance (ODA) project in the field of science & technology.
