Dr. Seonghoon Woo Listed among Forbes’ “30 under 30 Asia”
Dr. Seonghoon Woo, a senior researcher in the Center for Spintronics at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), was listed among Forbes’ “30 under 30 Asia 2018: Healthcare & Science.”
Forbes announced that Dr. Woo had “found a way to achieve the world’s first non-electrical memory,” and that “[this] breakthrough, made using spin-electronic technology and nanomaterials, could lead to huge benefits in energy efficiency.”
Dr. Woo has been studying original technology that could replace conventional silicon-based electronic devices with ones that utilize electron spin. He recently drew attention with his research findings on “zero-power” memory devices. He has been also pioneering researches on skyrmions, the likely basis for future memory/communication devices.
Over the past three years, his research outcomes have been published in Nature Materials, Nature Physics, and Nature Communications, and his achievements garnered him the 2017 TJ Park Science Fellowship (POSCO TJ Park Foundation) and the 2017 KIST’s Person of the Year award. His work was listed among the 2017 Ten Nano Technologies (the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Korea Nano Technology Research Society) and the Top Ten Achievements by Government-Funded Research Institutes (the National Research Council of Science & Technology).
Dr. Woo stated that he was delighted by the outpouring of public interest in his field of Spintronics, and that he would concentrate on research into commercializing ultra-low power-consuming, ultra-high speed spin-electronic devices to help lead the upcoming 4th Industrial Revolution.
Forbes began compiling its annual “30 under 30 Asia” list in 2016. The list includes 300 influential young innovators in ten different fields. Thousands of candidates from the 24 Asia-Pacific countries are nominated online, screened by Forbes’ journalists, then deliberated upon by a panel of professional judges before making it onto this prestigious list.
