KIST Hosts the 7th KIST-KMSA Research Camp
- 3-day convergence R&D training for future doctors
From August 3 to 5, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) Biomedical Research Institute and the Korean Medical Student Association (KMSA) will hold the 7th KIST-KMSA Research Camp at KIST headquarters in Seoul, offering medical students a special opportunity to participate in S&T research and personally experience the convergence of medicine and engineering.
This year marks the camp’s 7th anniversary, and around 50 graduate and undergraduate medical students will participate, choosing their fields of interest and then engaging in research activities at KIST’s Biomedical Research Institute and Brain Science Institute. KIST researchers will give assignments correlating to each field, and students will undergo in-depth education on various research topics via hands-on training.
In addition, lectures will be given by researchers who achieved great research outcomes thanks to their backgrounds in medicine. Former Kyungpook National University School of Medicine professor Kim In-San, now Chief Research Officer for KIST’s Biomedical Engineering Research Center, and Seoul National University College of Medicine professor Kang Keon Wook will deliver lectures on such diverse topics as cancer research trends and clinical research experiences, fostering active discussions among the students.
Yang Eun Gyeong, director-general of KIST’s Biomedical Research Institute, said, “This camp will encourage future doctors to become more interested in biomedical engineering as well as clinical medicine. My hope is that it will create synergy between the medical and engineering fields, greatly contributing to future developments in biomedical engineering.”
