Marking the 50th anniversary of the institute’s foundation (February 10, 1966), Korea Institute of Science and Technology (Dr. Lee Byung Gwon, President) hosted the ceremony to commemorate the anniversary with more than 450 guests and staff and faculty of the institute, including Prime Minister Hwang Kyo Ahn, the 1st Vice Minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning (Minister Choi Yang Hee), Mark Lippert, the US Ambassador to Korea and many other special guests, February 4 (Thursday) at the institute building at Hawolgok-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul.
Prime Minister Hwang said in his congratulatory remarks, that the institute should secure core technologies to open a brighter future for all of us, based on the achievement KIST made so far and to drive creation of new growth engines with commercial development with the technologies.
President Lee Byung Gwon announced the slogan ‘KIST 2066, Beyond MIRACLE’ unveiling new vision and renewed the commitment to go beyond the glory and research achievements of the past half century and to ‘become a global institute, going beyond the boundary of Korea, exploring the unknown and serving as the R&D center of the nation.
After the ceremony of 50th anniversary of the foundation, a time capsule was buried in the 50th Anniversary Park. The time capsule was filled with many photos of memorable moments and books, souvenirs and letters to those who will open the capsule in 50 years, as a message to connect the past, present and future of KIST.
Since it was founded as the first government-funded research institute February, 1966, over the past 50 years KIST has been building the driving force for economic growth of Korea with extensive national R&D, including a leadership role in foundation of Pohang Steel Company, establishment of electronic industry development plan and R&D for semi conductors, to meet the demand of the time. Also, it contributed to building foundation and expanding base for advancement of science and technology of Korea.
Most recently KIST succeeded in developing technology for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and completed technology transfer and starting this year, with support of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, it embarked on new KIST future-oriented projects, including quantum computer development and nano neural network emulation technology.
