Korea Institute of Science and Technology (Dr. Lee Byung Gwon, President) and Alpnion Medical Systems Co. (CEO Go Seok Bin) of Iljin Group (Chairman Hur Jin Gyu) signed an agreement for technology transfer for ‘early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s’ February 1 (Mon.) at KIST.
With fund support of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (Minister Choi Yang Hee), the research team of Dr. Kim Tae Song/ Kim Young Sun/Hwang Kyo Sun of KIST developed the ‘technology to detect possibility of Alzheimer’s early on’ with general blood test, for the first time in the world and held technology transfer seminar last November for around 40 medical equipment and pharmaceutical companies.
The existing Alzheimer’s disease detection was dependent on recognition functional test or Brain MRI, incurring high cost and undermining accuracy. On the other hand, KIST developed innovative technology to enable low-cost and efficient detection of the disease before on-set with simple blood test.
The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning is set to provide continuous supports, including support for early commercialization and follow-up research as well as overseas marketing consulting to make sure to utilize full potential of the technology, to secure global markets and contribute to public heath.
A source of the ministry said “Organizing a team of experts to provide extensive support from medical equipment approval and new medical technology evaluation, we will make allout efforts to complete the process of evaluation and approval by the first half of next year. Also, with inter-departmental cooperation, we will make sure to provide support for follow-up researchers to refine early detection technology for mild cognitive impairment and leverage overseas network for global marketing.”
Chairman Hur Jin Gyu of Iljin Group said “We will put focus of the entire group on early commercialization of the technology and have no doubt that the technology will make great contribution to reducing national and social cost for Alzheimer’s by improving public health.
President Lee Byung Gwon of KIST said “Even after the technology transfer, the institute will keep cooperating for refinement of the early detection technology and make efforts that it will be included as essential item in national health check-up program.”
According to the National Assembly Budget Office, the social expense, incurred by the Alzheimer’s in Korea is estimated to be KRW 12 trillion 2015. By 2025, 1 million out of 11 million elderly population in total are expected to suffer dementia and more than 70% of them are expected to be Alzheimer’s patients. The total value of the technology transfer is estimated to be more than KRW 330 billion, including advance payment and running royalty.
