Korea Institute of Science and Technology (Dr. Lee Byung Gwon, President) announced that the ‘4th KIST R&D EXPO’ was held January 21 at Seoul main campus for young researches to exchange ideas and learn research know-how from senior researchers.
‘KIST R&D EXPO’ has been held since 2012 to introduce the achievements of the year, made by KIST to ‘develop creative original technology to drive science and technology of the nation’ with direct funding support of the government (“government funding”) and has been serving as the venue for knowledge exchange among different disciplines and departments.
Especially, marking the 50th anniversary of its foundation, KIST put together a program to share know-how of large-scale technology transfer and implementation of open convergence research projects as well as a platform for presentation of new research ideas. This was part of the institute’s efforts to meet the expectation of the government and the public, playing its role in driving creative economy and creation of new growth engine. In the morning session, Dr. Ha Heon Phil, the winner of Dasan Technology Award (Korea Economic Daily) and the award for the scientist of the month (awarded by National Research Foundation of Korea) made presentation to share his know-how on large scale technology transfer. He won the awards, in recognition for 3 cases of successful technology transfers in a row, with development of effective catalyst to process nitrogen oxide in low temperature ,reducing one of the leading cause of air pollution. △ Also Dr. Lee Hae Jin shared proposition for the coming 50 years, based on the work experiences in outside assignment and Dr. Nho Chu Won, who has been appointed as the head of 2015 Convergence Research Project (with funding of KRW 30 billion for 3 years), made presentation on know-how on large-scale convergence project implementation.
In the afternoon session, Pioneership Award event was held for new researchers from different research disciplines to team up to present and select new ideas. Along with experts in the field, diverse members of students and administrative personnel participated as general judges, to make sure ideas understandable and acceptable by general public to get additional points, in the process of idea evaluation. The winning team was awarded with the fund for creative research activities for follow-up research of their topic.
On the sideline, ‘Junior Society’ was held to offer opportunities for young researchers who will drive the future of KIST, like institute researchers, temporary researchers and graduate and doctoral students to present research papers, mostly written by researchers at institute or lower level. An an another additional event, the award winning ceremony of ‘KIST R&D Student Ideas Contest’ was held, to facilitate and identify new and innovative ideas and adventurous perspectives of science talents who will lead science and technology of the nation in the future. 12 students from primary, junior and senior high schools participated in the student idea contest and 16 of them won the awards after evaluation by patent attorney, researchers and science teachers. Along with prize money, the award winners will be provided with support for patent application for the idea.
President Lee Byung Gwon of KIST said “KIST R&D EXPO is an event, put together by TFT of researchers themselves with contents of their own making.” He also added “The event was designed to offer a platform for researcher to get to know each other’s research topics and participate voluntarily, rather than being directed to convergence projects.”
