KIST High School Science Camp Held during Summer Vacation (2016.07.18)
- Topics included brain science, physics, life science, sensor systems and chemistry -
From July 18-29 at its headquarters in Seoul, The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) hosted its Science Camp for high schoolers during summer vacation.
This is the fourth consecutive year the camp has been held, and it consisted of six fields: brain science, physics, life science, sensor systems and chemistry. Around 250 students applied, and researches selected 7 to 10 per field, for a total of 55 students.
KIST’s Science Camp is more than just a field-trip. Participants take classes from researchers at the institute, engage in debates with fellow students and conduct experiments. To this end, researchers from each field produce workbooks and serve as mentors in regard to students’ studies and choice of career.
“I have a lot of interest in computer programming, but there are few experts I can learn from at school. Through this camp, I can seek advice from experts and decide my future career path,” said Lee Seok-hoon, a Donghwa High School student who participated in the sensor system aspect of the camp.
KIST President Dr. Lee Byung Gwon said, “Students who participate in the KIST Science Camp usually decide to pursue further studies in the natural sciences and engineering. I hope this camp helps nurture them into a new generation of S&T researchers. I welcome any student who chooses to attend our camp rather than relax through the summer.”
A memorable part of the camp was when Lee Hyo, who attended the camp back in 2011 when it was hosted by the KIST Brain Science Institute, presented her experiences to the current crop of students.
Lee earned a Bachelor’s degree from Washington University, and will enter Harvard’s Neuroscience Program (a combined Master’s and doctorate program) starting this fall. After participating in the Science Camp, Lee interned at the KIST Brain Science Institute and, in 2014, co-authored a paper published in ‘Natural Science’. On the final day of camp, students from each field presented their research results and engaged in debates with their peers. The Science Camp is part of KIST’s efforts to freely disseminate scientific and technological knowledge throughout the community.
