KIST (Dr. Lee Byung Gwon, President) and Bundang Cha Medical Center (Director Ji Hun-sang) signed an agreement of cooperation at Bundang Cha Medical Center on November 26, for the purpose of setting the foundation to secure and commercialize source technologies to advance health and medical care. The agreement bears significance as it is aimed at promoting cooperation between a research institute and a hospital through the establishment of translational research center. The translational research center will be located in Bundang Cha Medical Center and be named as “CHA-KIST TRC.” Going forward, the two parties will strengthen organic connection among basic research, clinical research and commercialization research through joint research and exchange of people.
KIST(Molecular Recognition Research Center, Ph.D Choi Man-ho) and Bundang Cha Medical Center (pediatric department, Prof. Yu Eun-gyeong) have conducted joint research on sitosterolemia since 2012 and this agreement is expected to boost their collaboration in clinical diagnosis.
※ Sitosterolemia is caused by an excessive accumulation of phytosterol in blood, which is similar to hypercholesterolemia, a major type of metabolic symdrome. Therefore, there is a high possibility that sitosterolemia is mistaken as an illness caused by cholesterol and treatment methods tailored to sitosterolemia should be urgently developed.
In advanced countries, research institutes and hospitals are actively engaged in translational research, contributing to the development of state-of-the-art convergence technologies for the purpose of commercializing new clinical diagnosis technologies and enhancing public welfare. Clinical doctors and scientists carry out joint research in the same research lab for the same theme. These joint research activities facilitate the exchange of ideas and research for convergence.
President Lee Byung Gwon of KIST said “We expect this agreement will help set the foundation for research cooperation between MD and Ph.D. Hopefully, we will secure source technologies in medical engineering for the development of new health and medical technologies and the enhancement of public welfare, and put existing technologies into early commercialization.”
Director Ji Hun-sang said “Bundang Cha Medical Center will actively tap into its excellence in clinical research and provide support for the commercialization of new medical technologies for the treatment and diagnosis of patients. I expect medical technology will become a new growth engine contributing to the national competitiveness.
