Prof. Manz at KIST Europe receives the Lifetime Achievement Award in the 2015 European Inventor Award
Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST, President Lee Byung-gwon) said Prof. Andreas Manz, the head of the microfluidics research group at KIST Europe (Director Choi Gui-won), received the lifetime achievement award in the European Inventor Award held in Paris on June 11.
The European Inventor Award is an annual award held by the European Patent Office and recognizes inventions contributing to the innovation, economy and society of Europe. This Award consists of five categories and shortlists only 15 finalists out of more than 300 candidates. Among the five categories, the lifetime achievement awards go to European inventors who made remarkable contributions to their research area and the European society as a whole through ceaseless efforts and dedication for a long time.
This year, the European Inventor Award Ceremony kicked off at Palais Brongniart, Paris with an exciting opening performance on June 11. During the award ceremony, each candidate’s accomplishments and the snapshot of their lives were introduced in short video clips and at the end of the ceremony Prof. Manz of KIST Europe was named as the winner of the lifetime achievement award. He received a sail-shaped trophy. A sail is the symbol of the European Inventor Award, which means human inventions led humanity to set foot in unchartered territories.
Prof. Manz was chosen as the winner, in recognition of his contributions applying the lab-on-a-chip technology to analytical chemistry and bio-science. Prof. Manz is one of the pioneers in the area of micro chip technology application to chemistry and he is the one who coined the term, ‘Lap on a Chip.’
Prof. Manz is reputed as an authority in chemistry. Previously in February 2011, Science Watch, http://sciencewatch.com/), the on-line weekly science magazine of Thomson Reuters, named top 100 scientists of the world and Prof. Manz ranked 48th on the list. He also received the Khwarizmi International Award in Iran in March this year. The European Inventor Award was yet another acknowledgment of his expertise as scientist.
Prof. Manz stated "Even though I am Swiss, I am even more pleased that my research work at KIST Europe, which is a Korean research institute in Germany, was recognized. I hope this award will become an opportunity to invigorate joint research between Korean researchers and the researchers at KIST Europe.”
