Workshop Infuses S&T into Traditional Korean Industries
On June 26, in Gyeongsangbuk-do, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)’s Center for Traditional Cultural Renaissance held the Workshop on Region-level Traditional S&T Cooperation, in hopes of infusing modern S&T into Korea’s traditional cultural industry in order to increase the competitiveness of its products and fashion it into a new national growth engine.
The workshop was co-hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the National Research Foundation of Korea, and the Council for Heritage Science. It was co-organized by the Center for Traditional Cultural Renaissance, Andong National University, Gyeongbuk Technopark, the Korea Food Research Institute, and the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, and sponsored by Gyeongsangbuk-do’s provincial government.
The event received participation from the Council for Heritage Science* as well as from various experts in S&T and traditional culture-related fields. It featured successful convergence traditional industry models, as well as plans for supporting Gyeongsangbuk-do’s key traditional industries: namely, the traditional liquor, textile, and natural dye industries. The event provided a debate platform for “re-discovering traditional culture and creating new values,” and it served as a stepping-stone for converging traditional industries with S&T.
*The Council for Heritage Science is operated by the Center for Traditional Cultural Renaissance and is composed of a group of 20 organizations that include educational institutions, various associations, and the National Science Museum.
