KIST Hosts 2017 Academia-Research Convergence Conference
- Planning convergence research for the 4th Industrial Revolution
On September 21, at its headquarters in Seoul, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) co-hosted the 2017 Academia-Research Convergence Conference with the five universities (Korea University, Kyung Hee University, Hanyang University, Kookmin University, and Konkuk University) that it partners with in operating the Academia-Research Joint Faculty Program.
The Academia-Research Joint Faculty Program was intended to kickstart joint research and education through the shared utilization of human resources by government-funded research institutes and universities, in accordance with the Industrial Education Enhancement and Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation Promotion Act. Outstanding professors and researchers designated by the program are fully affiliated with both the institute and university, and they jointly perform convergent research and education.
The conference began with a keynote presentation on promoting academia-research cooperation. It was given by Dr. Kim Joosun, a project manager at the National Research Foundation of Korea. This was followed by an introduction to KIST’s big research centers (the Center for Particulate Air Pollution and Health; the Convergence Research Center for Diagnosis, Treatment and Care System of Dementia; and the Center of Human-centered Interaction for Coexistence) and presentations on three convergence research fields (BT-IT, NT-IT, and ET-IT). Eighteen professors from the Academia-Research Joint Faculty Program offered lectures, and participating students presented 55 academic posters.
The conference host, Dr. Lim Hyewon, director of KIST’s International Affairs Division, stated that “KIST has been working to conduct successful social-problem-solving convergence research and on-site S&T training through its Academia-Research Joint Faculty Program. Today’s conference will foster substantive convergence research for the 4th Industrial Revolution and further strengthen educational programs for creative future researchers in convergent scientific fields.”
