Dr. Cheong Byung Ki Appointed President of the Green Technology Center
On May 1, 2019, Dr. Lee Byung Gwon, president of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), appointed Dr. Cheong Byung Ki as the third president of the Green Technology Center (GTC), a KIST-affiliated institute that fosters national green technology R&D policy and international cooperation on climate change. Dr. Cheong is expected to head up the center for the next three years.
As its new president, Dr. Cheong proposed his vision for positioning the GTC as a think-tank on climate change and national capability concentration. He suggested that the GTC’s mission be to lead climate change responses and innovative, globally inclusive growth, while also serving as a convergence hub for green/climate technologies from Korean government-funded research institutes. He proposed three specific strategies for achieving this goal: meeting global standards, reinforcing mission-oriented approaches, and building convergence/cooperative systems.
In accordance with these strategies, the GTC will concentrate national capabilities on policy-making for future-oriented sustainable technologies, engendering innovative growth engines, and enacting proactive policies―such as the activation of a hydrogen economy―that directly impact the public. It will also strengthen its identity as an institution specializing in climate change, and become a focal point for promoting open cooperation, obtaining world-class technologies, and leading international cooperation and climate technology ODA.
Dr. Cheong is a graduate of Seoul National University, and he received his Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon University before joining KIST as a researcher. He led the development of core/original technologies in the informatics and electronics fields, and his research outcomes in the area of high-speed, high-concentration semiconductors have been transferred to major Korean semiconductor manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
An expert in next-generation nano-/electronic materials, he has served as director of KIST’s Materials and Life Science Research Division. And since 2017, he has been the director of KIST’s Research Planning & Coordination Division, playing an important role in the institution’s R&D planning, budgeting, and evaluation processes. Recently, he received the LS Academic Award from the Korean Institute of Metals and Materials.
Shortly after assuming the position of GTC president, he stated, “Through my experience as a KIST researcher and administrator, and also as a board member for a world-class research association, I will do everything in my power to contribute to green/climate technology innovation and policy-making. In addition, I will lead GTC’s inclusive/innovative growth, fashioning it into a global leader in technologies and policies for responding to climate change.”
