KIST, North Jeolla Province, Chonbuk National University, & Wonkwang University Sign MOU to Foster Bio Industry
On March 19, 2024, KIST (President: Seok-Jin Yoon), North Jeolla Special Self-Governing Province (Governor: Gwan-Young Kim), Chonbuk National University (President: Oh-Bong Yang), and Wonkwang University (President: Seong-Tae Park) held an MOU signing ceremony at the North Jeolla Provincial Office in Jeonju to create a specialized bio complex, foster global talent, and develop technologies in North Jeolla Province.
After submitting a designation application to the National High-Tech Strategic Industry Specialized Bio Complex Contest on February 29, North Jeolla Province has sought to strengthen solidarity with institutions and companies in the bio sector and is accelerating the pace of fostering related industries.
As part of this move to strengthen solidarity, representatives from the four participating parties, KIST President Seok-Jin Yoon, North Jeolla Province Governor Kwan-Young Kim, Chonbuk National University President Oh-Bong Yang, and Wonkwang University President Seong-Tae Park, signed an MOU to create the specialized bio complex, nurture global talents, and develop technologies in the area.
KIST was established in 1966 as the first government-funded research institute to establish a science and technology-based national development strategy, and is currently aiming to elevate the status of Korean science and technology through world-leading innovative research and development.
KIST's Jeonbuk branch, located in North Jeolla, opened in January 2008 for the purpose of developing technologies in connection with fostering strategic local industries, and serves as a central base for R&D on cutting-edge composite materials and components.
Going forward, North Jeolla plans to form a “specialized complex” alliance comprised of industry, academia, research institute, hospital, and government facilities, which will work together to promote interest in the complex, conduct collaborative research, and carry out human resource exchange projects.
KIST President Seok-Jin Yoon stated, “I believe that this MOU will be an opportunity for North Jeolla Province, which has been designated a special self-governing province, to become the center of the high-tech bio industry and an axis of national economic development.” He added, “KIST will make every effort to continue supporting the development of North Jeolla Province and revitalize the local innovation ecosystem.”
Gwan-Young Kim, Governor of North Jeolla Province, commented, “Through this agreement, we hope that North Jeolla can lead the cutting-edge domestic bio industry in the future,” and added, “We plan to succeed in attracting a bio-specialized complex and strengthening cooperation with our partners.”
