KIST Holds 2019 Academia/Institute Convergence Conference
The 4th KIST “Academia/Institute Convergence
Conference” was held in Seoul on November 20, 2019, with several universities*
that jointly manage special integrated academia/research institute courses with
KIST to promote collaborative research and foster creative, convergence-minded
S&T personnel in attendance for the event.
*Participating universities: Korea, Kyung Hee, Yonsei, Kookmin, Konkuk, Hanyang
Under the theme of “Convergence Research and the Cultivation of Global S&T,” Honorary Professor Do-Yeon Kim from Seoul National University (former President of Pohang University of Science and Technology) and 18 other academic professors gave keynote lectures on BT, NT, and ET convergence. In addition, participating students presented a total of 79 research posters as a way to exchange the results of their joint convergence research and open the floor for academic communication.
The Director of KIST’s International Affairs
Division, Dr. Sang Kyung Kim, mentioned that “the academic specialization
program, which is managed by KIST and its partner universities, focuses on
joint research and education with the aim of successfully carrying out social
problem-solving convergence research and fostering global S&T personnel.”
The President of KIST, Dr. Byung Gwon Lee, also stated, “we hope that this
conference, which marks its fourth anniversary this year, will serve as an
opportunity to explore strategies and development measures for the academic
specialization program, including the planning of human resources development
for the actual application and preparation of the 4th Industrial Revolution.”
Beginning in 2013 with Korea University, KIST has since formed integrated academia/research institute professorships with a total of six universities. Under the Act on the Promotion of Industrial Education and Industry-Academia-Research Institute Cooperation, these professorships are designed to promote joint research and education by utilizing human resources from government-funded institutes and universities. The teachers and researchers selected to be professors for these programs are considered part of both the research institute and the participating university, and are brought on in a full-time capacity with the aim of jointly promoting convergence research and training.
