Dr. Lee Cheolju Is KIST’s “Person of the Month”
On January 28, Dr. Lee Cheolju from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)’s Center for Theragnosis received the KIST Person of the Month Award in recognition of his outstanding research.
In cooperation with Prof. Hwang Cheol-Sang’s team from Pohang University of Science and Technology, Dr. Lee’s team revealed the mechanism for how formylmethionine-transferase enables eukaryotes to survive in extreme environments.
This research is thought to be an important breakthrough in determining how certain lifeforms can survive in extreme conditions. The KIST team was first in the world to discover formylmethionine’s role in the sustaining of life, and Dr. Lee’s mass spectrometry-based research into N-terminal peptides was vital for locating those peptides that contain formylmethionines, which only exist in trace amounts and for a very short time.
The details of their five-year research achievement were published in the November 2018 edition of Science.
KIST’s Person of the Month Award recognizes and rewards overachievers who contribute to the institute in creative, innovative ways. Winners are selected by the Reward Deliberation Committee.
