Dr. Kim Ig Jae and Dr. Kim Soo Min Are KIST’s “Persons of the Month”
On December 21, Dr. Kim Ig Jae and Dr. Kim Soo Min each received the KIST Person of the Month Award in recognition of their outstanding research.
Dr. Kim Ig Jae’s team from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)’s Center for Imaging Media Research has been spearheading the development of complex recognition technology as part of the Popular Living Research program, which is funded by 32 billion KRW (over a 5-year period) from multiple government organizations in an attempt to solve common issues in Korean citizens’ everyday lives. An MoU was signed with the city of Anyang regarding technology development and verification, and Dr. Kim’s team’s success in transferring new facial recognition software to FiveGT demonstrates the excellent quality of the technology, as well as the team’s prominent role in technology disseminating.
Meanwhile, in a global first, Dr. Kim Soo Min’s team at KIST’s Functional Composite Materials Research Center successfully synthesized different 2D materials by creating new technology that enables synthesis of individual boron nitride crystals. In doing so, they fostered a paradigm shift in cutting-edge 2D material research, a field that can be applied to transparent flexible electronic devices, gas barriers, sensors, and filters. Their research was eventually published in Science.
KIST’s Person of the Month Award recognizes and rewards overachievers who contribute to the institute in creative, innovative ways. Winners are selected by the Reward Deliberation Committee.
