KIST held the ‘2014 KIST-IMCM Symposium for Spectrum Conversion Technology and Application,’ an international symposium for conversion research of materials, at the Convention Hall of International Cooperation Building in KIST from May 8 to 10.
The theme of the symposium was ‘spectrum conversion and application technologies.’ Spectrum conversion refers to changing a spectrum of light, which is not usable in a particular device (ex: ultraviolet and infrared light not usable in solar cells) into a usable spectrum (ex: visible light in solar cells), and such a conversion technology can be used to raise the efficiency of solar cells and for silicon-based UV detectors.
The theme of the symposium was divided into several subjects; materials for spectrum conversion, nanophotonics for spectrum conversion and device application of spectrum conversion. During the symposium, 25 experts from home and abroad presented lectures, including Prof. Mohamed Henini at the University of Nottingham (UK), Dr. Tomoko Akai at AIST (Japan), Prof. Zhiyong Fan at HKUST (Hong Kong) and Prof. Cho Gil-won at POSTECH, and over 70 posters were presented.
Director Lee Kwang-ryul of KIST Institute for Multidisciplinary Conversion of Matter, or the organizer of the symposium said, “Researchers in the areas of materials and energy will have heated discussions about ways to promote cooperation on convergence research, and identify new agenda. In particular, the significance of this symposium lies in the point that we will explore solutions to environment and energy issues, which have emerged as the gravest challenges facing the world, through the development of materials to utilize solar energy with higher efficiency and research their application technologies.”
