KIST Hosts the 7th “Share Scientific Imagination Festival"
- Scientific Imagination Painting Contest held for elementary school students
- The Scientific Experience Booth promotes scientific interest among young people
On April 21, in celebration of Science Day, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) hosted its annual Share Scientific Imagination Festival.
This event was geared toward elementary school students and has been held annually since 2011 as part of KIST’s Share Science campaign to promote scientific thinking and increased public awareness on the importance of science & technology.
For example, each participant in the Scientific Imagination Painting Contest created a painting with the theme “A Future City I Want to Live in.” These paintings were judged by three professional painters, with a total of 26 students receiving rewards or certificates for their work.
This year, the Scientific Experience Booth was introduced, offering students a variety of interesting activities to participate in. In particular, the KIST Sensor System Research Center’s Smart Toy, as well as diverse hands-on exhibitions such as the Chromatography Experiment and Coloring Paper Flowers Using Chemicals drew overwhelmingly positive responses. The center also promoted S&T to parents by guiding them through the KIST History Hall, conducting Q&As with KIST researchers, and offering free consultations on their children’s future careers.
Dr. Lee Byung Gwon, president of KIST, said, "Korea is heading off a demographic cliff, so that is why I think we have a responsibility to motivate our nation’s youth and improve their scientific and creative thinking abilities. I hope students who participated in this festival will develop a greater interest in science, and that their scientific potential was successfully nurtured through the painting contest and other science-based activities."
This year marks the event’s 6th anniversary, and approximately 200 people participated. Instead of charging entrance fees, KIST encouraged participants to donate clothes, books, and other items that could then be provided to the Life Line Social Welfare Center.
