KIST, Korea’s best university joint research lab for excellence in basic research
- Conduct 「KIST Joint Research Lab」 project by selecting top Korean professors in core research areas of KIST
- Provide KRW200M as annual research fund for research excellence
Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST, President Dr. Lee Byung Gwon) kicked off 「KIST Joint Research Lab」 project, a new type of convergence research program that selects Korea’s top professors in core research areas of KIST and they conduct joint research with KIST teams. It aims to promote a prolonged and meaningful academic and industry cooperation to achieve excellent results by using research capabilities and competent research personnel in domestic universities. Each year, professors selected are provided KRW 200million as research fund for 3 years (Stage 1) and the period can be extended based on the result.
KIST named Prof. Sung-Yon Kim (Brain Science) and Ki Tae Nam (Carbon Capture and Storage) of Seoul National University, Dae-Shik Kim (Artificial Intelligence (AI)) of KAIST, Yunho Kim (Quantum Computing) of POSTECH as a project chief in each field on Friday (March 25). Creative and autonomous research environment with continuous support fund provided by KIST will encourage selected researchers to achieve excellent results. In the meantime, joint research teams in KIST expect to expand a collaborative network in research areas by using competent research talents of joint labs in the universities and to enhance R&D capabilities and to drive major results. The number of Korea’s best joint labs selected in the corresponding research areas will be increased in the future.
KIST implemented Open Research Program (ORP) since 2013, aiming to achieve excellent research results in order to resolve pending issues in the Korean society by sharing major project fund with outside experts. “Early detection of dementia by using blood”, a research project funded by ORP and carried out with collaboration among industry, university, and institute, recently completed its technology transfer in large scale. Based on the experience and success of ORP in the past, KIST designates and supports 「KIST Joint Research Lab」 as a form of open research in basic research areas, aiming to achieve excellent research result via academic and industry joint research.
President Lee Byung Gwon said, “KIST will overcome technical limits in material, element, information, robot, agriculture, energy, bio, environment areas and pioneer in uncharted territory with the start of this project. We need a new way of thinking and a new approach to carry out advanced research projects. KIST plans to provide the best talents in corresponding fields with customized support to create synergy between core research areas of KIST.”
