Pursuing Cooperation in Science and Big Data to Overcome Cancer and Infectious Diseases
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Seok-Jin Yoon) announced that it had signed a business agreement with the National Cancer Center (NCC; President: Hong-Kwan Seo) for conducting research and policy projects to overcome cancer and infectious diseases at KIST's headquarters in Seoul on June 17th.
The signing of this agreement is expected to contribute to efforts to overcome cancer and infectious diseases by utilizing KIST's research capabilities and the NCC’s health infrastructure. KIST and the NCC are planning to conduct cooperative research by applying scientific analysis methods such as artificial intelligence and computational science to big data on diseases and health. They will also pursue cooperation in various other areas, such as professional human resource exchanges and infrastructure utilization.
Hong-Kwan Seo, the President of the NCC, said, "There is a continued threat to public health through the addition of infectious diseases caused by COVID-19 to cancer, the leading cause of death in Korea. This agreement is meaningful in that it will allow our two organizations to take steps to overcome these diseases together.“
Seok-Jin Yoon, the President of KIST, commented, "Under this agreement, we plan to actively support KIST's excellent technologies, such as artificial intelligence, infectious disease response system, and computational science, being used in the healthcare sector. Through cooperation, we will make efforts to further contribute to the development of the national health sector."
