KIST “People of the Month” Winners Announced
- Dr. Sebastien Royer, Dr. Son Ji-won, and Dr. Kwon Seok Joon head up the list
On March 24, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) announced that three research teams were selected to receive the KIST “People of the Month” award in recognition of their outstanding research accomplishments.
One of the winners, Dr. Sebastien Royer of the Center for Functional Connectomics, investigated the workings of place cells in the brain’s hippocampus, coming up with ground-breaking possibilities for treating brain diseases (such as Alzheimer’s) that result from damage to the hippocampus region. He also coined a new algorithm related to artificial intelligence.
Dr. Son Ji-won, head of the High Temperature Energy Materials Research Center developed a world-class ceramic fuel cell that is ten times better than existing fuel cells made of similar materials. He accomplished this by successfully constructing electrolyte membranes from hydrogen ion conducting ceramics.
Dr. Kwon Seok Joon from the Nanophotonics Research Center theoretically identified a life-extension mechanism and developed a stable high-molecular-weight organic solar cell with remarkably improved efficiency and lifespan. His research could potentially be applied to the mass production of large-area organic optoelectronic devices that would remain flexible and stable over a long period.
KIST’s People of the Month Award recognizes and rewards overachievers who contribute to the institute in creative and innovative ways. Candidates are nominated by their division heads, and winners are selected by the Reward Deliberation Committee.
