The Optical Society of America named KIST alumnus Dr. Sang Sam Choi as an awardee for Sang Soo Lee Award
Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST, President Dr. Lee Byung Gwon) announced that a KIST alumnus Dr. Sang Sam Choi (current advisor of Laser&Physics Co., Ltd.) was selected as an awardee for the 2nd Sang Soo Lee Award, established by the Optical Society of America (OSA).
Founded in 1916, OSA is the leading professional association in optics and photonics with 18,000 members across 80 countries. The Sang Soo Lee Award was established in 2013 by OSA to honor the late Dr. Sang Soo Lee for his pioneering role in establishing optics in Korea. The award recognizes eminent individuals who played a key role in optics and photonics. It is presented in even-numbered years. The first recipient of the award for 2014 was Argentine physicist Dr. Mario Garavaglia.
Dr. Sang Sam Choi joined KIST in 1974 as a senior researcher and developed optical fiber technology for the first time in Korea, contributing the country to enter into the ultra-high-speed optical communications era. The award selection committee of OSA said that the award was given to Dr. Choi “for pioneering the development of optical fiber in Korea which led to flourishing optical fiber and optical communication industries.”
KIST informed to hold an event to announce the launch of a new research funding project in Feb 9 at 4 PM (Wednesday) at the institute building at Hawolgok-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. KIST decided to conduct the research to develop quantum computing and simulation technology for artificial neural networks as an Open Research Program (ORP).
